Countdown to Spring Training – 16 Days

Two words. That’s all you need. Just two words: Bo knows.
16 bo jackson

Most readers know all about Jackson. For the uninitiated who never saw him play, he was an electrifying player to watch, and he combined power and speed. He was the first player ever to be named an All Star in two professional leagues (NFL, MLB). In 1990, he became one of just a few people in major league history to hit homeruns in four consecutive at bats (Bo’s did not come in a single game, however). His best season was his All Star season of 1989, when he ranked fourth in the American League in homers (32) and RBI (105). In 1993 he was voted “Comeback Player of the Year.” This card, from his 1993 season, is part of my personal collection. Oh, as an aside, Bo won the Heisman Trophy as a running back at Auburn.

He certainly knew how to handle a bat

And he had a decent kip up

He had no fear of walls

Quite simply, Bo knows….

Here are a few other greats that wore #16 that are in my card collection.

Rick Monday
Monday played 19 seasons in the bigs, the last 8 as a Dodger where he wore #16. Monday is now on the Dodger radio broadcast team, along with Charlie Steiner. Here’s his 1972 card when he was with the Cubs.

Wilbur Wood
Wood played 17 seasons, mostly with the White Sox, and was a 3 time All Star. He lead the league in appearances 3 times, including an amazing 88 games in 1968 while posting an ERA of 1.87 over 159 innings. Over his career he was used as both a starter and reliever, and racked up 164 wins. While he wore number 16 as an Athletic, this is his 1972 White Sox card.
